How Light Sticks Work

July 28, 2011 Posted by Home and Fashion 0 comments
Light Stick Diagram

A light stick consists of a glass vial, containing one chemical solution, housed inside a larger plastic vial, containing another solution. When you bend the plastic vial, the glass vial breaks, the two solutions flow together, and the resulting chemical reaction causes a fluorescent dye to emit light.

The Activator

We just saw that a light stick is a housing for two chemical solutions, which give off light when they are combined. Before you activate the light stick, the two solutions are kept in separate chambers. The phenyl oxalate ester and dye solution fills most of the plastic stick itself. The hydrogen peroxide solution, called the activator, is contained in a small, fragile glass vial in the middle of the stick.
Light Stick
Heating a light stick will accelerate the chemical reaction, causing the dye to emit a brighter glow. The light stick on the left has been activated and kept at room temperature. The light stick on the right has been activated and placed in scalding hot water for one minute.

When you bend the plastic stick, the glass vial snaps open, and the two solutions flow together. The chemicals immediately react to one another, and the atoms begin emitting light. The particular dye used in the chemical solution gives the light a distinctive color. Depending on which compounds are used, the chemical reaction may go on for a few minutes or for many hours. If you heat the solutions, the extra energy will accelerate the reaction, and the stick will glow brighter, but for a shorter amount of time. If you cool the light stick, the reaction will slow down, and the light will dim. If you want to preserve your light stick for the next day, put it in the freezer -- it won't stop the process, but it will drag out the reaction considerably.
Light Stick Wars
Light sticks are just one application of an important natural phenomenon -- luminescence. Generally speaking, luminescence is any emission of light that is not caused by heating. Among other things, luminescence is used in televisions, neon lights and glow-in-the-dark stickers. It's also the principle that lights up a firefly and makes some rocks glow after dark. Modern Light
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) represent various types of semiconductor devices that produce incoherent narrow-spectrum light fascicles when powered with a steady-state voltage electrical source, producing the effect known as electroluminescence. LEDs come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, nowadays serving for a multitude of purposes: illuminating traffic signals, railroad crossing signals and show panels, facilitating optical fiber communications, providing backlighting for LCD televisions and displays, being integrated in remote control and optical devices (infrared LEDs), or being used simply for decorative purposes (LEDs can emit light of various colors blue, green, yellow, orange, red and purple, to name only a few). LED lights have come a long way, today’s offer comprising highly reliable, durable and economical designs that can take various forms (LED bulbs, LED pods, LED tubes, LED displays, etc) and fulfill many different roles (functional or purely aesthetical).
Modern Light1
 Modern Light
LEDs are by far superior to traditional light sources such as incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, as they use less energy and produce less heat (unlike conventional light sources which consume a lot of electrical energy but transform only a fraction of the used energy into light, converting the rest of it into heat, LED lights are very economical, consuming less electrical energy and transforming a fantastic part of it into light), have an impressively long life span (LED lights can last for more than 10 years), light up more quickly (in most cases LEDs can achieve full brightness in a matter of microseconds, compared to some fluorescent lamps that usually light up after 0,5 or 1 second and achieve full brightness in an average of 30 seconds) and can directly focus the light they emit (unlike incandescent and fluorescent light sources that generally include an external reflector that redirects the luminous rays in the desired direction).
Modern Light2
Modern Light
Compared to conventional sources of light, LED bulbs and other similar LED devices can directly emit light of a certain color without the aid of color filters. Consequently, the colored light produced by LED bulbs is considerably brighter, clearer and more vivid, rendering colored-light producing LED bulbs the perfect devices for interior and exterior illumination of architectural structures, commercial panels and various decorative objects. In addition, LED lights such as LED bulbs, LED pods and LED tubes don’t burn out unexpectedly like incandescent bulbs; when they fail, LEDs tend to dim out gradually, continuing to fulfill their purpose even in the event of a malfunction. While traditional light sources are unreliable and sometimes even unsafe (incandescent bulbs can sometimes explode due to fluctuant voltage), LED lights are durable, reliable, safe and efficient. All the mentioned advantages of LEDs render such devices the perfect replacement for incandescent and fluorescent light sources and nowadays LED light sources are already extensively used in many different industrial branches.

Modern Light3
 Modern Light
The main disadvantage of LED light sources and the primary reason why such devices are still rarely used for domestic, private purposes is that they have an expensive character. Unlike the omnipresent incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, devices that are usually very cheap, most LED light sources (particularly those with a high luminosity index) are still unaffordable to some categories of persons. But, if you carefully establish a cost-benefits analysis, LEDs are a fantastic choice and a wise investment for anyone, regardless of material condition. Compared to conventional light sources that have a low buy price but consume lots of energy and need to be regularly replaced, LED light sources have a higher buy price but last for many years and consume only a small fraction of the energy used by incandescent and fluorescent light devices. Thus, if you are looking for durable, reliable, energy-efficient light devices, LED light sources are by far the best choice. So, if you want to find out more about LED lights or even about LED bulbs, you should visit these links.

Torn Lighting
One of the writers for the Yanko Design blog, Billy May, created a series of sort-of wall-integrated LED lighting fixtures – referred to as “torn lighting,” they blur the edge between structure and fixture.  I love the description on the site:  Anyone who has spent a significant period of time either living in a small windowless apartment or tripping through the galaxy on a mind bender may have at one point felt the urge to tear a hole in the wall to let some light in.

Lighting Tips

Lighting Tips
Before designing a room, you need to consider two types of lighting: natural and electric. Make the right choice and you can turn a dull, soulless room into a vibrant space.
Lighting
Natural Light
To maximise natural light:

Let light come through windows without interruption. Remove secondary glazing, which absorbs light, and objects from window sills. Replace heavy curtains with blinds or muslin drapes. Mirrors amplify light. Place a large mirror opposite the window to reflect light around the room. Choose light and bright paint colours.
Lighting1
White, off whites & pastel tones will make a room look larger whereas red, orange, brown and black absorb light and make a room look smaller and darker. As a rule of thumb, the lighter the paint - the closer to white - the more reflective it is. Remember that cool colours work best in north facing rooms whereas warmer tones help to brighten up the cooler, darker side of the home.
Lighting2
Your choice of flooring will affect how light a room is. Carpets are soft, absorbent and hold the light whereas floorboards with a high-gloss finish reflect light around the room. Keep small, dark rooms bright and fresh, with as little pattern as possible. This will make the space look larger and lighter.
Lighting3
Electric light

You can never light a room as efficiently as the sun so think of electric light as atmospheric background - it can create a cosy environment or a really dramatic one. Choose something more versatile than a single bulb hanging from the centre of the ceiling. Use multi or directional lights on a track, which can be used to highlight your favourite painting or mirror. Layer the lighting throughout the room so you have the right kind of lighting for your different needs, such as ceiling lights, table lamps and uplighters.
Put a floor socket in the middle of the room, so you don't have trailing leads across the floor. Highlight architectural features, such as ceiling coving, with uplighters. Each lighting type should be controlled separately to provide a variety or effects and combinations.
