Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) represent various types of semiconductor devices that produce incoherent narrow-spectrum light fascicles when powered with a steady-state voltage electrical source, producing the effect known as electroluminescence. LEDs come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, nowadays serving for a multitude of purposes: illuminating traffic signals, railroad crossing signals and show panels, facilitating optical fiber communications, providing backlighting for LCD televisions and displays, being integrated in remote control and optical devices (infrared LEDs), or being used simply for decorative purposes (LEDs can emit light of various colors blue, green, yellow, orange, red and purple, to name only a few). LED lights have come a long way, today’s offer comprising highly reliable, durable and economical designs that can take various forms (LED bulbs, LED pods, LED tubes, LED displays, etc) and fulfill many different roles (functional or purely aesthetical).

LEDs are by far superior to traditional light sources such as incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, as they use less energy and produce less heat (unlike conventional light sources which consume a lot of electrical energy but transform only a fraction of the used energy into light, converting the rest of it into heat, LED lights are very economical, consuming less electrical energy and transforming a fantastic part of it into light), have an impressively long life span (LED lights can last for more than 10 years), light up more quickly (in most cases LEDs can achieve full brightness in a matter of microseconds, compared to some fluorescent lamps that usually light up after 0,5 or 1 second and achieve full brightness in an average of 30 seconds) and can directly focus the light they emit (unlike incandescent and fluorescent light sources that generally include an external reflector that redirects the luminous rays in the desired direction).

Compared to conventional sources of light, LED bulbs and other similar LED devices can directly emit light of a certain color without the aid of color filters. Consequently, the colored light produced by LED bulbs is considerably brighter, clearer and more vivid, rendering colored-light producing LED bulbs the perfect devices for interior and exterior illumination of architectural structures, commercial panels and various decorative objects. In addition, LED lights such as LED bulbs, LED pods and LED tubes don’t burn out unexpectedly like incandescent bulbs; when they fail, LEDs tend to dim out gradually, continuing to fulfill their purpose even in the event of a malfunction. While traditional light sources are unreliable and sometimes even unsafe (incandescent bulbs can sometimes explode due to fluctuant voltage), LED lights are durable, reliable, safe and efficient. All the mentioned advantages of LEDs render such devices the perfect replacement for incandescent and fluorescent light sources and nowadays LED light sources are already extensively used in many different industrial branches.

The main disadvantage of LED light sources and the primary reason why such devices are still rarely used for domestic, private purposes is that they have an expensive character. Unlike the omnipresent incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, devices that are usually very cheap, most LED light sources (particularly those with a high luminosity index) are still unaffordable to some categories of persons. But, if you carefully establish a cost-benefits analysis, LEDs are a fantastic choice and a wise investment for anyone, regardless of material condition. Compared to conventional light sources that have a low buy price but consume lots of energy and need to be regularly replaced, LED light sources have a higher buy price but last for many years and consume only a small fraction of the energy used by incandescent and fluorescent light devices. Thus, if you are looking for durable, reliable, energy-efficient light devices, LED light sources are by far the best choice. We just bought our third glass globe pendant light - a "best product" for us because of its versatility, simple design, and price. Locally, we find ours at Clark-Devon Hardware; online they are available from the manufacturer, Thomas Lighting: In our condo, we put one in our small entryway; in our new house, we're going for two aligned in the kitchen. Love them. Available for $68.20 from Thomas Lighting for an 8" sphere; we paid just under $60 each for the 12" at Clark-Devon Hardware.

Globe lighting - Outdoor lighting comes in many different shapes, sizes and prices. Outdoor globe lighting are just one other way how you can light your home exterior. Globe lighting are very versatile in design and use, you can use them to increase your ambiance and create amazing landscape designs, but you can also use globe post lights or lamp post globes to illuminate your surrounding properly.

There will always be the never ending choice and debate on what globe lighting source to use. Solar lighting and low voltage lighting are both very good options but they have both their pros and cons of using. I got the bid back for building the concrete pad for the backyard patio earlier this week, and it looks like we are going to go for a late September build date.  A 9 by 17 foot concrete pad that will get covered with some type of stone next spring. It’s all part of the grand landscaping plans for the house. Anyway, since we are actually going to have a larger more functional outdoor seating area, we are probably going to need some lighting solutions as well.

I was trolling the internet looking for something visually cool, and I came across these lights from Y-Lighting. Design by Marta Laudani & Marco Romanelli with Massimo Noceto, Y-Lighting is now carrying “Stones Outdoor Lights” produced by Italian manufacturer Oluce.

Stones are outdoor lights that take on the familiar shape of large stones, just as the name implies. They are made of durable, weather-tested polyethylene. Stones can be used individually but based on the photo on the site, they look best in clusters. Each stone, uses a standard compact fluorescent bulb, to help with energy efficiency, and since compact fluorescent bulbs are now available with warmer light values, these could take on a yellowish cast depending on the bulb. There are 2 sizes available, roughly 10 by 14 and 16 by 24 inches respectively. The larger Stone costs $20.00 more.

The downside of Stones Outdoor Lights is that they aren’t cheap. At $407.00 most people probably aren’t going to be purchasing large volumes of these. The good news is Y-lighting offers free shipping, and there is no tax. I guess I need to start saving now, if I want to have these for next springs patio opening.

Unique Outdoor Lighting such as cool Outdoor Party Lighting can make that special occasion one that you will remember for all time. Outdoor Rope Lighting is another excellent example being both cost effective and adaptable. Both have a unique feel about them and are not often seen so are specialised in that sense.

Outdoor String Lighting is also a Lighting Fixture that I like very much as you can use it for almost any occasion, whether it be during the festive period, at Christmas time, or if you are hosting an outdoor garden party say, or any time of the year in fact.

In the photograph below you will see the way multi-colored garden lighting is used to excellent effect. In this instance Outdoor Tree Lighting is used to illuminate spectacularly a tree with a beautiful red glowing light. It looks kind of eerie so perhaps this might have been taken during Halloween night. Definitely spooky though.

Outdoor Gas Lighting holds tastes of “Days-Gone-By” and a sense of history about it and conjures up that “Olde World Charm” feeling. Reproduction models can be picked up quite cheaply but you can also occasionally see for sale originals at a few hundred dollars apiece or maybe a bit more depending on the condition of the item in question.

Outdoor Hanging Lighting such as Outdoor Pendant Lighting. is a fixture that I really like because they are unusual and you do not often see them. This is no doubts due to the weather elements but these days one can buy them with special coating to protect against the weather and double insulated wiring which also stops dampness and water getting in.

Cheap Outdoor Lighting is another unique lighting fixture but cheapness need not necessarily mean you will need to compromise when it comes to quality and safety. Really good Unique Outdoor Lighting can be picked up fairly cheaply if you shop around.But one thing to note, if you are going to go down the secondhand route please do ensure that you get the fixture passed for safety by a qualified electrician before you have it installed. Electricity and Safety are two words that go together very well I think you will agree:-).
