A photograph is essentially a record of the light conditions at a certain point in time and space. We recognize the patterns of colours and shapes in a photograph because they resemble what we see in daily life. Light is so common that we take it for granted, but the photographer (and the painter) needs to be attuned to the subtlety of light in order to make effective pictures. What we consider to be 'white' light is actually made up of all the colours of the pectrum. This is easy to demonstrate with a prism – let light shine through it and it will refract into all the colours of the rainbow. In fact, we see rainbows because water droplets are acting as prisms by breaking up the white light from the sun and splitting it into colours.

Objects have different colours because they reflect those colours while absorbing the others. Black absorbs all colour – it is the absence of colour. Even though all light may look alike to us, different light sources emphasize certain parts of the colour spectrum. Bright sunlight from about 10 am to 2 pm, for example, has a bluish tinge. Early morning and late afternoon sunlight is red because it is filtered through the earth's atmosphere.

Artificial light also has distinct colour characteristics. Incandescent light brings out red colours while florescent light is greenish-blue. The photographer can take advantage of these different characteristics when taking shots. Either the camera can be adjusted to compensate for the light source or the special characteristics of the light can be used for artistic effect. Most digital cameras can be adjusted for colour balance. There may be several options – auto, manual, daylight, incandescent and flash. They can be used to compensate for the light source so that white is truly white. This allows the colours to be reproduced accurately.

In some cases you may wish to get a special effect by altering the white setting to a different colour. You can preview how this will look on the LCD monitor. The direction of the light source is a very important consideration in photography. Light can come from above, behind, below or the side of the subject and each produces a different effect. Generally speaking, a diffuse light coming from the sides will be a good starting point when photographing people. This kind of light occurs in the early morning and late afternoon, or can be produced in the studio with an umbrella reflector.

Of course, all kinds of special effects can be produced by lighting your subject in different ways. Backlighting can create a halo effect, while overhead lights can create strong contrasts between light and shadow. Another factor which affects photography is the strength of the light. Direct light creates strong shadows while diffuse light can create a warm atmosphere by reducing the contrast between objects. The beauty of digital photography is that you can experiment to your heart's content without running up film or processing costs. Get ideas for lighting by looking through photography books and trying out various types of lighting to see what works for you.

This Landscape project was a joy to work with.  It was a Landscapers dream come true to turn a very bland typically sloped (graded) garden into something interesting for a very reasonable budget. GB Building helped with this split level garden from the design stage. The aim was to add some interest to the garden scheme and to encourage wild life in doing so. 

This has added value to the property some (£10.000) and cost under half that to complete.

The wall is built from drystone pre-formed blocks (Cotswold variety).
The pond was formed simply with a liner built into the blocks.
The water pump and power supply are installed by our certified electrical team.

GB Building are proud of this achievement and came in on budget as always.

Singapore Green Landscape 2010 gives an overview of the various non-governmental organisations (NGOs), green groups, business associations and groups, green websites, government agencies, and institutes and centres in Singapore, which are related to the environment.

We hope that the publication is useful for everyone who wishes to find and connect with the environmental organisations in Singapore, and explore personal and business opportunities.

The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House decked out in Yuletide finery, with thousands of poinsettia plants, spectacular evergreens, trees, wreaths and fresh flowers. Dining tables set with period silver and china and mannequins dressed in authentic costumes complete the elegant setting.

All three houses are decorated and open daily for tours from November 18 through January 1.

Tours are also offered (without holiday decorations) during the summer.

MUSIC, MOTION, AND MERRIMENT - - Newport Beach, California is home of the annual “Christmas Boat Parade”, known as one of the ten best Christmas viewing events in the country. This award-winning house, located on Balboa Island in the middle of the Newport Harbor, is viewed by thousands of visitors who came by car, by foot, and by boat!

No wonder so many people stop to gaze at the lighted wonderland. There is animated action galore. While Christmas carols play in the background, “snow” drifts from the rooftop dispensed from a manufactured snow machine. On the rooftop, Santa waves from a chopper with rotating blades and a gingerbread man jumps on a lighted trampoline. Lighted wheels rotate on a choo-choo train; a tin soldier drums his drums; a snowman tips his hat; a gyrating Santa Claus dances; and even an illuminated Hula Dancer’ wiggles back and forth!

The house is anchored on one side by an eye-stopping 25 foot green blinking Christmas tree. On the other side the eight foot wide chimney is draped in a carpet of red lights inter-mixed with white lights that vertically spell “Balboa Island”. Blinking candy canes, stockings, bells, and snowflakes all add to the fun. There are 24,000 light bulbs in all.

Winning the admiration and gratitude of all who visit, the house has earned many prestigious awards: “1st Place Lights and Animation” and from the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce and “Photographer’s Choice”(the sponsors of the Boat Parade), and the “Best Animation” award from the Balboa Island Association. The house and its owner have also been featured in a PBS television special and newspaper articles.

What makes it all so amazing, owner Greg Zimmerman does all of the work himself, and makes many of the lighted decorations as a year round hobby. He’s always alert to searching for new light ideas and creations while on far flung vacations.

This is a garden-inspired design of the park in Asia. AguaFina offers a stunning collection of carved Asian charm in harmony with the modern landscape, inspiring, landscape gardens, ponds and water features. Garden design can be used as an alternative to get a warm atmosphere and different, but still modern.

I saw some really cool looking outdoor LED lighting products at the 25th Annual Fall Atlanta Home Show recently.

The LED landscape lights (made by RedBird Industries) weren't the only cool thing we spotted at the show...by a long shot. There were all manner of innovative products and loads of really interesting ideas just begging to be noticed. We left the show with a bag full of literature on...well...you name it and I've probably got a pamphlet or business card on it.

The three main reasons that the RedBird LED Lighting booth caught my eye were:

the sheer brightness of the lamps themselves

the LED lights on display practically covered the full color spectrum.Who makes these little gems? RedBird Industries. This little booth of colorful outdoor lighting drew us in like moths to a bug zapper. Very colorful, durable and unique. Those are three terms that come to my mind when I think about the RedBird booth.

There is one drawback to the lights made by Redbird. Price. They are very expensive, as far as outdoor lighting products go. The 4"x4" solid Onyx railing post cap will set you back $230. The Ipe Path Spike Lamp...$78. You get the picture. You really need to consider the materials and craftsmanship that go into these units when you're about to make a major landscaping purchase such as this. Make no mistake...they are absolutely beautiful.

But I must admit...you certainly get what you pay for with these little gems. Very high quality is standard and all of the natural stone lighting products are, indeed, one-of-a-kind lights. They also make lamps using sustainably harvested Brazilian Ironwood (Ipe) and copper. Their website boasts these next generation LED bulbs and lamps to be zero maintenance, waterproof, bugproof, shockproof and a LIFETIME WARRANTY.

Wait 'til you see these lights. Oh wait...you're about to.
