Big-time international design competitions encourage architects to “design and build feats of wonderment” and for the ocean-themed Yeosu, Korea World Expo 2012 (“The Living Ocean and Coast”) we can see what their creative imaginations might generate with water as a prime ingredient. MVRDV (Rotterdam, NL) submits a striking Water Cube Pavilion that imagines “a block extracted from the ocean” in which one is surrounded on all sides by water with a series of water “basins” that are stacked on top of each other. . The skin of the building is designed out of four layers of glass, with water in between. Fresh sea water from outside is constantly pumped into the basins as a natural temperature adapter. The skin contains elements to regulate temperature such as rolling curtains to control the UV penetration and solar PV cells to create energy for the water circulation and the light of the building. Our mobile society will squeal with delight at the submission from Melbourne, AU-based Peddle Thorp Architects. Their pavilion is is a vessel – a floating exhibition space that can be sailed to other cities. Today, adaptability is a key planning concept, so we love that this is a “living building that can adapt to suit an unknowable future.” Just think how great it would be if we could easily move the many abandoned and failed facilities that now litter the world landscape…schools, malls, hospitals that moved along with the population! When it comes to capturing the feeling of a landscape, I have to say that it is hard.  Back in college, I took quite a few classes with photography and all we did was landscape photography and to capture the very essence of the landscape and finding the right angle can be extremely difficult.  Fashion photography is all about making it look different and real.  You have models, you can move them and you can definitely have a bit more flexibiliy. 

When you are taking a picture of the landscape itself, you have to move yourself in order to find the best angle, you can not move the landscape.  D.L Ennis is honestly one of the best landscape photographers in the world.  Not only is this picture incredible, but it honestly captures the essence of the world around it and I just think that is very important when you are trying to take a picture of the landscape.

Landscape photography is also a great place to start learning photography as you will not have nearly as many distractions.  So if you are looking to snap a few pictures, get out your camera and go outside and start snapping pictures!

The field of landscape architecture is expected to experience significant job growth over the next several years. According the statistics reported by the United States Department of Labor, the employment rate for landscape architects is projected to increase by an astounding twenty percent. Populations around the globe are expanding. Growing populations are creating a need for development while the strain of development on the natural environment and resources is creating a need for trained individuals capable of balancing both facets without causing detriment to one for the other. Landscape architects are included among the professionals responsible for managing the two. The landscape architect works in collaboration with other professionals to create functional designs. However, while other professionals are concerned with the practicality of the project, it is the responsibility of the landscape architect to create a beautiful project design while ensuring the continued sustainability of the natural resources and ecology of the area being developed.

Landscape architecture has become one of the premier occupations of today; ranking among the best professions to enter. Providing the opportunity to contribute to the protection of the environment and natural resources while performing an essential service, the field is both challenging and fulfilling. The profession requires individuals with skills in creativity, science, problem solving, collaboration and an aptitude for technology. Individuals entering the profession will require knowledge and training in a vast array of disciplines and subject areas. Practical experience is essential to developing an inherent understanding of the various aspects of the field. The landscape architecture profession is competitive with most employers and clients seeking individuals with industry experience, even for entry level positions. It is exceedingly important to obtain an education in landscape architecture from a college or university with a comprehensive degree program which incorporates experiential training with academic studies. Selecting an institution with accreditation through the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board will ensure the quality of the program.
